alarm:clock euro Venture Quiz Winner
Congratulations for the being first with the winning answer goes to Paul Fisher (picture here) of the investment banking boutique, First Capital in London, who wrote in that it was AXA Private Equity in Paris that made the first open source investment in Mandriva, known back then as Mandrake Software. The deal was announced in August 1999.
Most of the people that took part in our Venture Quiz offered the Apax Partners-SUSE deal as the first open source investment in Europe. It was close as the SUSE deal came just a couple of months afterwards in November. It actually provided the better exit. SUSE was acquired by Novell in 2004 for $210M in cash.
Fisher's firm hosted an open source investment conference back in 2004, which gave him the edge.
