HQ: Bloombsbury, NJ Founded: 2001 Management: CEO Mark Downing is a Brit who formerly ran marketing for Micrel. Founders Ashraf Lotfi, Ph.D. and William Troutman, Ph.D. previously led power management R&D at Bell Labs. Investors: In December 2004, Enpirion did a $17M round led by RRE Ventures and Columbia Capital with Intel Capital and the Series A investors Canaan Partners and SAS Investors. Series A was $8M in January 2003. Business Model: Fabless semiconductor outfit focused on power supply for the new generation of smaller electronic products. Analysts say that Enpirion products reduce real-estate requirements and part count by more than half, while slashing development costs and time-to-market. It's Small! Competitors: Everyone in the analog semiconductor business. Dirt: Enpirion has power geeks hoping up-and-down with glee. "The EN5330 is in a Dual Flat No-lead (DFN) TSSOP footprint package that covers just over 100mm² of board space. Including the minimum of three external components, the entire DC-to-DC converter can be placed in as little as 135mm² of single-sided, or 102mm² of double-sided board space. More About Those Angels
Inc. managed to unearth the following interesting stat from academia: "Last year alone, 42,000 angels plowed $18.1 billion into early-stage companies, compared with a mere $304 million plunked down by VCs, according to a recent study by the University of New Hampshire's Center for Venture Research." Inc. ads that angels are increasingly picking up early stage slack from VCs who are more and more focused on later stage deals.
