Marchex Pays $164M in Cash for Domain Name Scheme

Someone just made a king's fortune by cashing in on misspellings. Marchex handed over dozens of bank bags to Name Development Ltd. which displays keyword ads across more than 100K domains. Many of the domain names represent misspelled domains - the company makes money by running ads on sites from traffic that got to the wrong place. Name development claims more than 17M unique visitors in November. The closing of the Marchex deal comes several weeks after the domain voyuer.com was auctioned for $112K, the highest sale price ever for a misspelled domain name, according to Domain Name Journal, and among the top 100 domain resales of all time.
