Dice.com - Profile

dicelogo.gif

HQ: Urbandale, IA

Founded: 1990. The company was previously named EarthWeb. The founders sold off parts of the business, as well as the EarthWeb name, in late 2000 and 2001 to Internet.com, now known as Jupitermedia. In 2001, the name of the company changed from EarthWeb to Dice.

Management: President & CEO Scot Melland has run the company since April 2001. Prior to joining the Company, he was CEO of Vcommerce.

Investors: In July 2005, General Atlantic and Quadrangle Group acquired the equity of Dice.com for approximately $200M.

Business Model: The company makes money by selling job postings to business looking to hire up. It has made several acquisitions. Dice.com is a job board for technology and engineering professionals; ClearanceJobs.com is a job board focused on jobs requiring active U.S. Government security clearances; TargetedJobFairs operates career fairs for candidates with active or current U.S. Government security clearances nationwide; and MeasureUp.com is for IT certification practice tests, assessments and online courses.

Competitors: CareerBuilder, Yahoo HotJobs, Craigslist, Hire.com and Jobster.

Dirt: Dice's recent acquisition by investment bankers continues the company's streak of being bounced around from owner to owner for years on end. There is an obvious sense that this is just an investment, and the flame of entreprenuerial passion or innovation has long expired. Still because it has been around for so long it retains traffic. As did other job boards, the company suffered after 9/11 but given its high recent selling price, Dice has clearly rebounded. Still, the compared to newcomers like Jobster, Hire.com and Indeed.com or social networking sites like LinkedIn, the company feels backward/Web 1.0.

Edmonton dominated the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday night and the 4-0 margin in Game 6 makes it hard to imagine the Oilers not hoisting hockey's Holy Grail above their heads in less than 48 hours. And it would not come as any shock to see defenseman Chris Pronger, who had another 31-minute night, take the honors for the Conn Smythe Trophy as the playoff MVP.
