NorCal Tech Thinks SoCal Tech is Sketchy
[This is part 2 in this week's series of unprovable trends - the previous post being that geeks are ascendant at the expense of suits. The a:c is non-partisan on the issue posted below as we have SoCal and NorCal roots.]
Now that the tech jobs have returned to Northern California, we have been in touch with several people who spent the past couple of years working Southern California and have gladly returned up North. Invariably they characterize the SoCal tech scene as shady. One of these returning sons quite his SoCal tech gig when management gave him the hard sell on Scientology (no joke). The basic stereotype is that SoCal is about get-rich-quick schemes, whereas NorCal is where serious technologists thrive, often with little regard for capital gains, and those that manage to secure fortunes in NorCal are often modest about it.
Two Tech States
SoCal means lowlifes like Scott Blum and his Buy.com scam/company and Norcal means eBay. Socal has Intermix/eUniverse with its accounting scandals and spyware troubles whereas Norcal has CraigsList. SoCal has pump-and-dump schemes such as Santa Barbara's Fastclick, where the founders bail as soon as they can in contrast to Norcal which has founders at Yahoo and Google who still show up to work each day even though they could buy the French Riviera.
SoCal’s most notable tech investor is Idealab’s Bill Gross who while he has been terribly successful, was also sued after the dot-com bust by a group of prominent investors, alleging he and his wife had been looting their business incubator to support lavish lifestyles. Norcal has the inscrutable John Doerr, Michael Moritz and dozens of others. NorCal even does SoCal better than SoCal does, as NorCal’s Netflix does Hollywood better than Hollywood and NorCal’s AdultFriendFinder.com does San Fernando porn better than San Fernando.

And it would not come as any shock to see defenseman Chris Pronger, who had another 31-minute night, take the honors for the Conn Smythe Trophy as the playoff MVP.
