Management: Xfire is a super-group. Mike Cassidy is CEO - he was also co-Founder and CEO of the search engine Direct Hit which was acquired by Ask Jeeves for $500M in 2000. He also co-founded and was CEO of Stylus Innovation, maker of computer telephony software that was acquired by Artisoft for a mere $13M in 1996. The dude also studied jazz piano at the Berklee College of Music and has degrees from MIT and Harvard Business School. His VP of Engineering is Chris Kirmse, who was a Senior Engineer at Yahoo Games and he created Meridian 59 – the world's first 3D MMORPG game. Chief Gaming Officer Dennis "Thresh" Fong was named the “Michael Jordan of Videogames” by the Wall Street Journal for being the World Champion of Doom, Quake, and Quake 2. He co-founded Gamers.com and Firingsquad.
Investors: In October 2005, the company raised $5M led by Granite Global Ventures with existing investors Draper Fisher Jurvetson and New Enterprise Associates
Business Model: The company offers a free, ad-supported tool for playing fellow gamers online, across platforms. Think of it as a social network for gamers, hosted by the Thresh, the most awesome gamer in the world. Xfire works regardless of game type, server browser, or gaming service that a player is using. Users get lots of community tools like in-gaming messaging and score tracking.
Competitors: Numerous other social networks and gamer communities including IGN Network sites and Gamers.com.
Dirt: The company already has 2M registered users. Now that boring old men like Ruport Murdoch own competitors like IGN, the kids are bound to prefer sites like X-fire. Game over.
