Where Are The Travel Startups?

ww1 biplane.jpg

We keep waiting for a rash of travel startups to emerge given how much cash there is to be made in the market. San Francisco counts a few VC-funded travel startups:

- Carlyle Venture Partners led a $6M venture round in Viator, moving the more mature company from Australia
- The blog TravelPost raised $1M in a seed round in July from Amicus Capital and Arba Seed Investment Group.
- Snapjot Raised $1.5M 3 years ago.
- White Plains, NY-based Wandrian recently raised some cash.
- RealTravel just raised $1M
- A handful of travel search companies like Kayak , SideStep, Qixo, and Mobissimo have raised funding.

But compare this activity to the number of companies doing work-groups, for example, and travel seems dead.

Some companies don't need VC money. I believe Alcatraz Media is bigger than Viator, and Alcatraz Media was started with no money, has never received a dime of capital, and has no debt.
