Tech Money > Space Biz
Amazon.com founder Jeff Bezos wants to be more than the online mall rat - he dreams of being a spaceman and to do for space what Howard Hughes did for commercial aviation. Bezos has purchased about 25 acres of land in Kent, WA for $13M+ $8M more to make all systems go, says the Seattle Times. If all goes according to plan, the facility will open its doors early next year as a rocket design and testing facility. Blue Origin's rocket will take off and land in a vertical position and will hold three passengers and it has 40 people on staff and it has about dozen job reqs open. This would all be so cool, except that the new space race is packed full of tech money men. Among those that Bezo's Blue Origin will compete with are space ventures from Virgin's Richard Branson, Id Software's John Carmack, Paypal's Elon Musk and Microsoft's Paul Allen. Luminous Is Hosed
$183M in VC investments and 7 years into it and Cupertino-based networking startup Luminous has decided to call it a day. Employees told Light Reading that everyone was put on waivers - the perfect holiday present. Luminous' fall is classic F*%cked Company fodder. The company bounced around from business model to business model and funding round to funding round. Buoyed by big company sales and access to capital it resisted liquidity options, until its largest partner and client - Scientific Atlanta - was bought out by Cisco - Lumininous' biggest competitor. When the company could not meet revenue targets, its largest investor - Hercules Capital - called it curtains. On top of this the board had made the unforgivable mistake of allowing CEO Chris Stark to reside in Texas while managing the Silicon Valley company. That's just awful.
