A Web Vigilante X-Mas
We have to hand it to the ingenuity of geeks. We have all received those absurd emails from Nigerian 'officials' informing us that a pile of money awaits us in Lagos. These are known as 419 scams, after the section in the Nigerian penal code. According to the US Secret Service Web site: "Indications are that Advance Fee Fraud (419 scam) grosses hundreds of millions of dollars annually and the losses are continuing to escalate."
In response, vigilantes or scambaiters respond to the scammers to waste their time and keep the scammers away from real potential victims and to have some cruel fun with the criminal element.
Shiver, the operator of 419eater.com is the king of scam-baiting. He has scammed money from the scammers and is currently having them tattoo themselves with a "Baited by Shiver" tattoo
