The Internet TV Broadcasting Biz Is For Real
The video blog (vlog) RocketBoom has a lot of media watchers talking. Many have compared Rocketboom to the Abram Report on MSNBC. The Abram report reaches 215K people each day while Rocketboom reaches 200K people per day. The production quality and expenses of RocketBoom vs. The Abram Report make it self-evident that RocketBoom should be a more profitable business. Moreover, RocketBoom has shown that it can bring in advertisers, having sold a commercial on eBay for $40K.
Still the vlogging business has its sceptics. BusinessWeek's Heather Green asks: "The question I wonder whenever these two kinds of show as compared is what about the length of the show? Is reaching roughly the same audience that's around for 3 minutes as valuable as reaching an audience that watches for 1/2 hour? I believe Rocketboom and its ilk are valuable and disruptive, I just don't know yet what this work is worth in the long run."
It's a fair point, however, any back-of-the-envelope cost estimate will show that the two people who create Rocketboom with virtually no costs except for their server will trounce the margins of any TV venture with comparable traffic.
Meanwhile, the NY Times catches the Internet TV bug, profiling several companies, a few of which stand-out as having great potential.
