Where Are They Now - Jerry Kaplan, Entrepreneur/Author of Startup

winster logo.jpg

Jerry Kaplan founded the pre-eBay auction site Onsale.com, he then founded the Kleiner Perkins-backed pen computer startup GO Corporation. That company was the basis for his bestselling non-fiction novel, Startup: A Silicon Valley Adventure. Most recently he was as CEO of Egghead.com.

Today we learn that Kaplan has closed funding for Winster. The Burlingame, CA-based startup secured $1.5M of a $1.75M Series A funding round led U.S. Venture Partners. The site offers prizes like Fandango tickets to users who play some online games. Its early days so we will cut Kaplan a break, but the model and site are not terribly impressive. His GM, Frank Yien, was GM at Experien’s Metareward, so we assume he knows a thing or two about online award scams.
