Media Guy Who Headed IDG Takes Over Domain Name Giant

namemedia logo.png We have been tracking the rise of a few VC-backed domain name squatters that are adding cheap media functionality to give their sites some stickiness. We now add another big player to the mix. Previously known as YesDirect, NameMedia is backed by Highland Capital Partners and Summit Partners. Over the last year, it has acquired a leading domain reseller, BuyDomains, GoldKey, and dozens of smaller domain collections to create a portfolio of more than 1M domain names.

NameMedia has also brought on former IDG President Kelly Conlin as its CEO. The a:c wishes that people in the domain squatting biz would call a spade a spade. It’s a BS business but it can be very lucrative. Conlin and others speak of the sector as if they are doing something innovative.

Good call.
