USB Security Plug-in - GuardID - Raises First Round

Mateo's GuardID Systems has raised $5M in a 1st-round funding from Trinity Ventures. The trends are on their side. According to Symantec's semi-annual Internet Threat Report, home computer users are becoming the preferred target of cyber criminals. The report noted an 81% jump in the number of phishing emails in the first half of 2006 over the previous 6 months

The ID Vault USB Plug-in sells for $49.95

ID Vault is a USB security token with an embedded smart card chip. To access your financial accounts with ID Vault a) you need your ID Vault PIN (something you memorize), and you need your ID Vault itself (something you carry with you). If a thieves steals your ID Vault, they can’t use it without your PIN. If thieves steals your ID Vault PIN, they can’t use it without having your ID Vault.

As knowledge of phishing and pharming grows, consumers will start throwing down $50 for these keys to the car. If ID Vault can get some good distribution agreements to sell its product into the enterprise and to PC manufactures this thing could fly.
