Web 2.0 Funding Still Insignificant

A Dow Jones research subsidiary has published a report on Web 2.0 VC investing. Many in the blogosphere seem to focus on the stat that funding is increasing. However, out of $13B in VC investments in the first half of 2006, only $262M went to Web 2.0 companies.

How do they define Web 2.0? Applications used include podcasting, tagging, blogs, social networking, mashups, and wikis. Only 51 companies met this description and received any VC funding, for a total of $199M. Most of the Web 2.0 deals this year have been early-round investments.
