The Prince of Murdoch-dom Joins $40M Investment Party In TV Ad Template Co. Spot Runner

Watching commercials in NYC, SF or Zurich, we often see local ads with horrendous production quality hawking a local futon showroom, tire fixer or liquor store. We can understand buying ad placement via a local cable company, but how can they justify the cost of producing a commercial, as lousy as they look?

So we bought into the concept behind Spot Runner since we first posted on it, and now we see that some other smart media guys are ponying up. LA-based Spot Runner's $40M Series C round comes via WPP, CBS, Interpublic Group, Allen & Co. Tudor Investment as well as News Corp. scion Lachlan Murdoch. Back for more were Index Ventures and Battery Ventures. That is some pretty strong strategic funding.

To review, Spot Runner provides fairly high quality TV advertising templates that could be used by thousands of business types. The local business owner then just inserts their logo and messaging to localize the ad. They then use Spot Runner to buy local advertising. In the process, production costs then go from tens of thousands of dollars down to a few hundred bucks. Of all the broadcasting companies that we have seen in recent years, Spot Runner is the first that has a shot at becoming the Google of TV ads.

ThumbTech:stocker - Some Fourth of July Fireworks With Washington Mutual

Thursday July 3, 2008

Remember everything we said yesterday about investing in "stable staples" of consumers and small and micro caps that are less volatile? Just forget all of it as we discuss Washington Mutual (WM:NYSE), a stock that looks worse than the fools who stepped in the ring Mike Tyson's during his early fights (you can also add Evander Holyfield and his chewed up ear to the comparison). And yet, we couldn't find a better stock to provide a bigger bang after the Fourth of July and beyond. Some people might think that the folks at tech:stocker have already started celebrating the 4th by recommending a stock that has dropped 38 points since its 52 week high to give it approximately an 88% loss in value for that timeframe. Considering most people would never buy a house again if their current one dropped 88% in value, it's no surprise people have been avoiding this stock as if it got 8 miles to the gallon and looked extremely foolish on today's highways. The reality is Washington Mutual (Wamu) is nowhere near as unwanted as a Hummer and should rebound over the next 24 months. The Hummer on the other hand will continue to...
