$12M Invested In Virtual World Gaia Interactive

San Jose's Gaia Interactive has raised $12M in Series B funding, says PE Wire led by DAG Ventures with return backers Benchmark Capital and Redpoint Ventures. Gaia is a youth-targeted community role playing site with anime, manga, and video game discussions, where members create and customize characters to represent themselves.

The company's model is to sell advertising. It was founded in 2002 by Derek Liu, now CTO. Craig Sherman is now CEO at Gaia. He was an Entrepreneur in Residence at Benchmark Captital and before that he was COO at MyFamily.com.
