Media Player Startup SongBird Takes Sequoia Investment

The Songbird guys at rest

You read it here first: SF-based Songbird has gotten a lot of positive attention since it launched the first version of its media player. Now we understand that Sequoia has taken a first round stake in the company, which by the way does a great job of projecting big by calling themselves "Pioneers of the Inevitable" and for suggesting that their product should become as common as a web browser and by already selling Songbird t-shirts. We are not sure at this point what is the amount of the investment and who else invested in the round.

If you want to know how Songbird works, check their Screencast, which is very entertaining. You will see that Songbird plays and stores both audio and video files captured off of blogs and other sites on the net, no matter what file format.

The investment by Sequoia reminds us about a rival VC who recently described in admiring terms how ballsy Sequoia can be with investments. They are not afraid to make risky investments at early stages so long as a portfolio company has the moxy to think huge.

Songbird: "Our lead investor, Sequoia Capital, has been the investor and business partner in companies that make up over 10% of NASDAQ’s value." That's a nice calling card.
