San Francisco based Attendio matches user's interests with local events and couples that with social networking features such as invitations and reviews.

On the marketing side, one of the best things that Attendio has done is to recruit celebs like Olympian Johnny Mosley and Counting Crows Singer Adam Durritz to create events they are interested in.

Attendio's founder, Gerardo Capiel, was previously the CTO and co-founder of Digital Impact. Digital Impact, now Acxiom Digital, was a publicly traded company, which was sold to Acxiom in 2005 for $140M.

Attendio has raised seed funding from Felicis Ventures and Sunbridge Partners. We don't know the size of the round but it looks like it closed in January.

What-to-do sites have been a popular Web 2.0 focus of attention. Attendio competes with BusyTonight, Zvents, Eventful, MingleNow, ILCU andUpcoming. Given the amount of competion here, we would expect to see startups like Attendio partner up with newspapers and other established business to create private label or other partnerships to get distribution beyond core Web 2.0 users.
