Akamai/Limelight/BitTorrent Competitor Itiva Raises $7M

itiva.png
Palo Alto, California-based Itiva just closed a $7M round to compete against Akamai and others in video streaming. Itiva is not saying who are its new investors, but the company announced that Jerry Pierce, former Universal Pictures SVP, and Max Paley, VP of Multimedia for Apple, have joined its board. The company had raised $7M from founders and angels. The company is led by Michael Billard who led the development of the HP Linux-based Media Hub.

Itiva says it has developed a more robust delivery system than its competitors by deploying proxy servers that can detect and store videos. Ivita also has a peer-to-peer client. Akamai recently acquired RedSwoosh, a P2P clients that competes with Itiva.

Itiva has named a few smaller clients. It has been in tests with Dreamworks but no launch announcement has been made.
