Care.com Does Baby-sitter Search

care logo.png
Boston's Care.com just raised $3.1M from Matrix Partners. Subscribers pay $10 a month to get a listing of the caregivers in their area, along with ratings from the community. Subscribers get a free background check to make sure the caregiver has a clean record.

Chief Sitter is founder Sheila Marcelo who was an entrepreneur-in-residence at Matrix Partners. Marcel was a GM at TheLadders and before that a VP at Upromise. She is rolling this out to other services that fit the care bill: other forms of child care, pet care, senior care, and tutoring.

The a:c like the model but we don't think the subscription model is the right way to go. It strikes us that care giving can be a one-off where you don't need to do new searches every week or every month. You may want to do a lot of research to find a care-giver but when you find them you are good for a while. So a free, ad supported model or a one time charge would seem to make more sense.
