Japan's vending machine trail-blazer Apex is on-point with a new ad model whereby the someone who is jonesing for a caffeine jolt can get a free cup by sitting through 30 second video commercial. Of course the cup runs ads as well. Apex says it runs 35,000 drinks machines across Japan.

Now, that's smart marketing! It's much like CPC. You pay for the coffee, and force the customer to take a quick look at your product.

How can the advertisers be sure that the coffee junkie is actually looking at the ad and not looking at his cell phone? Maybe they should make them pass a quiz in order to dispense the coffee.
