Who Is The Biggest Chinese YouTube Clone?

youkou.png
We have been doing our best to follow the Chinese video scene but its not easy. Today information arrives indicating that Youku is the biggest Chinese video site. This came out of left field as we have been covering rivals like Tudou under the impression that they were the biggest.

Something called the Data Center of the China Internet (DCCI), a subsidiary of the Internet Society of China, shows that YouKu has gained market share over other competitors in: brand awareness, popularity and user demographics. The study found that 25.65% of the Internet users surveyed prefer Youku.com, a proportion higher than that of any other video website in China.

Call us cynical but we'd like more data points. Still, it does seem that YouKu is worth taking note of.

Youku was founded by Victor Koo, former President of Sohu.com (Nasdaq: SOHU). Launched in June 2006, it has raised 2 rounds from VCs totaling of $15Min total from Sutter Hill Ventures, Farallon Capital and Chengwei Ventures.
