Social Network For Geezers - TeeBeeDee - Raises $4.8M

TeeBeeDee says it has raised $4.8M in Series A led by Shasta Ventures with Monitor Ventures. The company got its start with backing from angels like Ron Conway and David Nierenberg; Jan Brandt (former vice chair and CMO of AOL); Jim Hornthal (founder of Preview Travel and former vice chairman of Travelocity); Ruth Owades (founder of Calyx & Corolla and Gardener's Eden); and Bill Sahlman, senior associate dean of Harvard Business School). Shelby Bonnie, cofounder of CNET Networks, joined the board.
The company issues the qualifications that the site is currently in preview mode, with plans for a full launch in September.
TeeBeeDee seems to be fairly well staffed already and the site has the full range of social networking features. It is an information network for individuals at midlife, in their 40s and 50s, who are interested in meeting each other online. It was founded by Robin Wolaner who has a long history in publishing at places like CNET, Parenting.com and Sunset magazine. Robin has been able to recruit a good number of other experienced publishing hands. The startup is headquartered in San Francisco.
