acquia.png
Acquia has raised $7M in a Series A financing led by North Bridge Venture Partners, with Sigma Partners and O’Reilly AlphaTech Ventures. Dries Buytaert, a creator of Drupal is one of the founders. Drupal is an open source modular content management system written in PHP. Large users of Drupal include SonyBMG, Warner Brothers Records, Forbes, and The Onion.

Dries says it was time to launch a commercial company around Drupal as he has nearly completed his PhD work at the University of Ghent., and he was encouraged by large users that this was needed.

Open source competitors to Drupal include Plone, Alfreseco, and DotNetNuke. To some extent it also competes against WordPress and Joomla.

The company plans to use the capital to create value-added software and network services around the popular Drupal open source web collaboration and publishing platform.
