Big Tent Further Funded For Family SocNet

bigtent.png
San Francisco's Big Tent Design has raised $5M in Series A from Menlo Ventures with return backer Mohr, Davidow Ventures.

The company plans to launch a social networking platform for family-friendly groups such as parents clubs, schools, non-profits, church groups, sports teams, etc. The platform will include membership management, discussion forums, calendars and event planning, payments, a marketplace, etc.

The firm is led by Donna Novitsky who was VP Marketing at PacketMotion, Instructor, Global Entrepreneurial Marketing at Stanford School of Engineering and Venture Partner at Mohr, Davidow Ventures.

While we agree that there is plenty of room for family friendly social networks, its unclear that a single destination site like this is the answer. We know people who have created Mommy groups on Ning or that use Facebook to organize family life. BigTent will have to compete with much better funded companies to match their functionality and scope.
