Satellite Startup GeoOptics Claims $50M In Funding Commits

Retiring Jet Propulsion Lab veteran Tom Yunck has been raising funding for his GeoOptics startup and tells the Wall Street Journal that he has raised $50M of the $100M warchest that he needs to build launch a couple dozen tiny satellites. How small are the GeoOptics birds? Just 65 pounds.

GeoOptics will provide the typical commercial data that are standards in the satellite biz from predicting hurricanes to documenting climate change. The twist is that GeoOptics wants to use a newish technique to record how radio signals bend as they travel through the atmosphere. In theory this can provide service at a fraction of the cost of traditional service.
