Facebook Dating Startup Zoosk Raises $4.1M

San Francisco-based dating site Zoosk has raised $4.1M led by Canaan Partners with ATA Ventures. The company has developed a simple dating interface for people to get to know each other on Facebook, MySpace, Bebo, etc. It's all straightforward - the main challenge seems to be how to cut down on spam and abuse.
Zoosk has some nice stats:
+ Founded in 2007, the startup has more than 400K daily unique visitors
+ More than 1M messages per day are exchanged through Zoosk
+3M dating profiles on the network with a growth rate 5-7% per week.

Zoosk faces a head wind of competitors. Match.com has hooked up with Facebook on a app called Little Black Book. “Are YOU Interested” is another top rival. While Zoosk and Are YOU Interested came out like gang busters, both applications have plateaued, with little growth over the last several months. It's unclear to us why that is.
Zoosk is led by CEO and founder Shayan Zadeh who was a programmer and program manager at Microsoft.

I have cancelled my Facebook and MySpace accounts which should have removed my Zoosk profile but my picture and personal details are still on their website even after having e-mailed them constantly for the last 2 weeks. I am in a stable relationship and do not want my details or picture on their site anymore but they refuse to remove it. I was not a premium member, so my profile should have been removed automatically when I left Facebook. They are not replying to any of my e-mails and as a result this is ruining my current relationship. Zoosk is AWFUL

Hey Laura, I work for Zoosk. Thank you for trying Zoosk, I'm sorry you're having troubles.
Myspace / Facebook sometimes fail to tell us when users remove the application. Here's how you deactivate your Zoosk account.
Re-add the application temporarily, then deactivate your account in the Zoosk Settings page. Click on "Account" and then "Deactivate Account" and the bottom of the page. You can then ReRemove the application from your Facebook/Myspace profile.
We're always improving Zoosk based on user feedback. While we can't answer every email (we have 15 million users), your feedback is important. If you need assistance, please check the help page (http://www.zoosk.com/help)
