Expedia's TripAdvisor Buys Top Rival VirtualTourist

virtualtourist.png
Expedia-owned TripAdvisor has acquired Manhattan Beach, CA-based user generated travel content's VirtualTourist.com as well as the smaller site OneTime.com. Terms of the deals were not disclosed.

Virtual Tourist was founded in 1999 and has 5M unique users per month and 30M page views per month. VirtualTourist boasts that its reach is more than 4x that of Frommers.com and Fodors.com; and 2X the reach of Concierge.com.

The primary beneficiaries of the deal are VirtualTourist's founders J.R. Johnson and Tilman Reissfelder, who refused to fold the company after the dotcom collapse.

For TripAdvisor they get some more cash cows as the travel space gets very high CPMs and there are few sites that get as much travel traffic as Virtual Tourist.
