Cisco Buys Open IM's Jabber

jabber2.png
Cisco has bought Denver-based Jabber, whose brand has become synonymous with open instant messaging. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. According to Cisco, Jabber will work with Cisco to enhance its Cisco Collaboration portfolio including Webex. The Jabber announcement follows a month after Cisco announced plans to acquire PostPath, which makes a Linux-based messaging and collaboration server, for $215M. PostPath can be a a replacement or complement to Microsoft Exchange Server.

If you haven't used it, the idea here is that you can use a single IM client to chat with others no matter if they are using AOL, MSN Yahoo Skype or Google IM clients - Google Talk is built on Jabber's protocal.
