Apple Buys PlaceBase/Pushpin As Google Maps Competitor

In July, Apple bought Los Angeles-based Placebase, the company that produced the maps API that Apple company used in their iPhone software - the deal is just now coming to light.
Pushpin is the name of the software API that Apple Openplaces uses. For whatever reason Apple has wanted to keep the deal silent. Placebase's former head of marketing John Vermes says they were "Acquired in 2009 by one of the most prominent consumer technology brands in the world."
Placebase's CEO Jaron Waldman ran the startup from 2005 and is now working at Apple. Waldman bootstrapped the company, and one former employee says that the company was doing well financially so it was a sweet exit.
