Kidlandia Funded For Neato Custom Kids' Maps

San Francisco-based Kidlandia has raised $725K out of a $1.0M funding round. The startup makes personalized maps named after kids and their families & friends, that come with favorite characters. Kidlandia maps can be shared, updated, and printed as gift puzzles, posters, placemats, wall-hangings.
Kidlandia has been around for a while - it was founded in December 2005 by Brian Backus, who was President of a vodka maker before that but who has done time in tech and was a creative producer at Disney Interactive at one point. Range: $39.95 for a small sized scroll to almost $180 for a framed, larger sized, high quality map.
Wow - what a great, simple idea. The challenge as we see it is that competitors could quickly bounce on this idea with Webkinz of Club Penguin custom map creations.
