Blowtorch Entertaintment Scorches With $50M Investment

Thumb Today's youth celebrates irreverence and irony and love nothing more than to mock and to be snarky. But Hollywood studios cater to older sensibilities. At least that's the premise of Blowtorch entertainment which plans to launch 6 feature films per year as well as shorts that will be dripping in irreverence. The company's first feature film will be "You Are Here" which is coming to theaters near you in the spring of 2008. It plans to release films during the school year in college markets, building "blowtorch" events around them both on-campus and in theaters. You Are Here Trailer Blowtorch Entertainment is launching with an announcement that it has raised $50M from Ignition Partners, angels in Hollywood, and at least one (unnamed) hedge fund. The company was co-founded by Kelly Rodriques who was a partner at Ignition, and before that he was the president and CEO of Totality, a which was bought by Verizon. His partner Paul Schiff iswhose films include "Rushmore," "My Cousin Vinny," "Date Movie," and "Young Guns." View - site... Continue...

Baseball Manager Tony LaRussa Wins Funding For His Film Production Startup RedBird Cinema

Thumb You gotta love baseball manager Tony LaRussa. Born in 1994, he still can play like a kid with the best of them, showing up for rock shows as well as launching a film startup called RedBird Cinema (a reference to his affiliation with the St. Louis Cardinals). Today Sandlot Venture Group said it would fund Red Bird's future films. First up is a feature film based on boxing's, Sugar Ray Leonard based on a screenplay by Pulitzer Prize winning author Buzz Bissinger. After that they plan to produce "Three Nights In August," a screenplay based on Bissinger's bestseller about the 2006 World Series Champion St. Louis Cardinals and its manager Tony La Russa. Based in Los Gatos, Sandlot Venture Group has raised $25M primarily from Silicon Valley angels who want to invest in film production with an eye on new digital distribution strategies.
