Brad Feld Joins $8.8M Round In Stealthy Movement Tracking Startup Oblong Industries
LA-based Oblong Industries wants us to think about replacing the mouse, just as Tom Cruise did in the sci-fi film Minority Report where he uses his hands to grab data. Oblong has raised around $8.8M in Series A funding led by Foundry Group, says PEWire. Brad Feld and Ryan McIntyre of Foundry have taken board seats. Oblong Industries calls itself the first commercial gesture recognition company. It plans to license its human gesture-based operating system to qualified development partners in various industries. The typical setup uses a set of cameras and matching hardware that can track 3D positions. With the help of gloves, the system infers the user's hand and finger positions and orientations. These are finally parsed by Oblong's proprietary gesture recognition engine where they are interpreted. Oblong is run by John Underkoffler who has worked on human machine interfaces at MIT's Media Lab for over two decades. Underkoffler was actually a technology adviser to Steven Spielberg for Minority Report. Oblong wants to make the futuristic scenes in Minority Report seem not so far out. View - site alarm:clock recently reported on an Oblong competitor Gesturetek which is already in commercial production. View - Oblong site... Continue...

Beware That Sponge Bob Might Be A SpyCam
A buddy heard from his maid that they shouldn't trust his nanny. So he used one of these spy cameras and caught the nanny treating his kids in the medieval style. Some think such spy games are creepy and they can be but they have their purposes. Today Logitech bought spy cam specialist WiLife for $24M plus a possible performance-based payment tied to certain revenue targets. The Draper, UT-based startup sells a variety of do-it-yourself home video surveillance systems that run on a standard Windows PC. View - site... Continue...

The Return of The Bionic Man
Loved The Bionic Man. Who didn't? Now an outfit called Berkeley Bionics says it is he first company in the world to bring exoskeletons to market. What would one do with an exoskeleton? Become a tireless hiker or climber. Or more practically, they can provide soldiers, disaster relief workers, wildfire fighters, and other emergency personnel the ability to carry heavy loads such as food, rescue equipment, first-aid supplies, communications gear, and weaponry. The company plans to augment human strength and endurance in the outdoors. This system provides its pilot with the ability to carry loads up to 150 pounds on his back "with minimal effort" over any type of terrain for extended periods of time without reducing his agility. The pilot's physical effectiveness increases significantly since he/she does not feel the backpack weight. An on-board computer ensures that the exoskeleton moves in concert with the pilot. The exoskeleton is comprised of two powered anthropomorphic legs, a power unit, small on-boardcomputer, and a backpack on which a variety of heavy loads can be mounted. The startup is a spinout from the Berkeley Robotics and Human Engineering Laboratory and is currently raising funding. View - site... Continue...
