Satellite Startup GeoOptics Claims $50M In Funding Commits
Retiring Jet Propulsion Lab veteran Tom Yunck has been raising funding for his GeoOptics startup and tells the Wall Street Journal that he has raised $50M of the $100M warchest that he needs to build launch a couple dozen tiny satellites. How small are the GeoOptics birds? Just 65 pounds. GeoOptics will provide the typical commercial data that are standards in the satellite biz from predicting hurricanes to documenting climate change. The twist is that GeoOptics wants to use a newish technique to record how radio signals bend as they travel through the atmosphere. Net By Space-Bird Co. WildBlue Gets Another $350M in Debt Financing
Just last January Denver's Wildblue Raised $200M and that clearly wasn't enough. This time around Liberty Media and Tennebaum Capital picked up the Tab - Liberty was the primary financier of the last round. The a:c digs what WildBlue is up to: selling broadband access via satellites to rural folk. Our country buddies who hail from the sticks tell us that Net access is next to godliness and they are willing to fork over a second mortgage to get broadband.
